Marcelo Araya-Salas

Marcelo Araya-Salas explores how communication systems evolve and shape behavior for wild animal populations, with a focus on hummingbirds, songbirds and bats in neotropical ecosystems.

He primarily works in neotropical ecosystems recognized for their biodiversity, including areas of Central America, South America, southern North American and the Caribbean Islands. His work with hummingbirds, songbirds and bats helps us understand how genetics, social learning and environmental context all shape communications — and that results in locally distinct, culturally transmitted traditions in wild populations. 

Araya-Salas’ work includes field observations and experiments, as well as analysis of each species’ evolutionary history. He has developed widely used, open-source tools for analyzing large bioacoustic datasets, and these tools make it possible for other researchers to study communication systems in natural environments. Currently working at Universidad de Costa Rica, he continues to build long-term field programs and collaborative networks in areas where resources are limited. His research, mentorship and commitment to science communication is contributing to a more integrative and accessible approach to studying communication and behavior in the wild.
